The event titled โ€œThe Chortiatis Holocaust โ€“ Memory, Now and Thenโ€ concluded with great success, bringing together participants from Greece and Croatia to honor one of the most harrowing tragedies of the Nazi occupation in Greece.

Organized by The NIDUS as part of the ReMEMBER Europe project, the public event offered a powerful tribute to the victims of the Chortiatis massacre. A detailed historical overview of the 1941โ€“1944 period, delivered by a distinguished historian, opened the event. The presentation was supported by rare archival photographs and documents, vividly illustrating the horrors endured by the local population.

A major highlight of the programme was the presentation of research findings centered on survivor testimonies, personal stories and key official reports โ€” including a detailed account by the Red Cross. These materials not only preserved the historical facts but also emphasized the lasting psychological and social impacts on the community, celebrating their resilience in the face of trauma.

Adding a deeply personal and emotional dimension, a representative from the Association of Families of the Victims of the Chortiatis Holocaust shared heartfelt reflections, stressing the critical importance of preserving historical memory and ensuring the victims are remembered with dignity.

The event concluded with an engaging dialogue between the speakers and attendees. This exchange encouraged critical reflection on how collective remembrance can foster a more just and humane future.

With a great number of participants, the event successfully merged education, remembrance and civic engagement, reaffirming the need to keep history alive –not just in memory, but in action.
